Baby's Story

Is Your Milk A Natural?

One day when my youngest daughter was a tiny baby still being breast fed my very dear friend came over to visit. She had just had a baby one month before me and was also breastfeeding him. She was a black woman. During her visit, the babies needed to nurse so we found comfortable chairs in the living room and chatted while they were feeding.

As is always the case, small children pick up on things quite well and have no qualms in letting adults know that. The TV commercials during this time period of history were showing the milk commercial with the catchy tune on 'milk is a natural' and my 3 year old used to sing along with the commercial when it would come on. Well, while we sat there chatting that day she came out from her play room and joined us.

The conversation when like this.... "Is YOUR milk a natural? My mommy's is!" After we stopped laughing long enough, my friend returned the answer... "Well I guess it's just as natural as your mommy's is." "Well," my daughter said, " My mommy has white milk. Do you have chocolate milk?" My friend answered, "No my milk is white too." So my daughter asked, "If my mommy has white skin and white milk, why don't you have chocolate milk if you have chocolate skin?"

My friend was having a lot of fun with this conversation. Her answer back to my daughter was precious. "God made me so that my skin would turn dark in the sun and that is why I am chocolate colored but my milk doesn't get in the sun so it stays white. When my baby drinks it, it will help keep him dark like I am." That seemed to satisfy my daughter's curiosity for the time being so she toddled off again and resumed her play and we spent the remainder of our visit chuckling.
