When the Baby Arrives Home
What Is Your Baby Like?
Ok, so you left the clinic or hospital and are home alone with your partner and baby. Don’t do more things than you can and take advantage of the time you have to get to know your new baby. It is possible that you will at first feel frightened, but soon you will get used to responding to the needs of your baby. Prepare yourself to have some difficult nights, so use the day to sleep and rest. Your schedules will not be the same for a long time.
The most important thing is that you have trust in yourself and in your correct judgment. During the first months, the only thing your baby will require is being warm, dry and fed. And surely without doubt you can achieve that.
Make sure the environment and life in the house remain stable. Don’t stress out, because babies need to get used to normal sounds within the house. If you raise the baby in a noiseless environment, any little noise will bother the baby afterwards.
According to studies, around 70% to 80% of mothers, feel the “baby’s melancholy” between three and five days after the birth, due to a series of physical, psychological and social reasons, which alter the behavior. However, the so-called “postpartum depression” has not ended. Similar symptoms can show up after three or four months, when the help that you counted on initially diminishes. In this case, do not doubt in accepting offers of support from your family, friends or neighbors. It is also important you follow a rigorous diet and that you set yourself realistic objectives. If after two weeks you continue feeling depressed or anguished, look for specialized help, but don’t close up or block out your sensations because it will hurt you and your baby.
Did You Know That?
It is believed that an excess of copper and lack of zinc contribute to postpartum depression. Take a vitamin supplement, talk to your doctor or go to an alternative therapist outside of your house such as reiki, shiatsu, aromatherapy or floral remedies.
